Congratulations to Michael Murphy, Dylan Jones and Thomas Whittaker at the Rolls-Royce Doctorial Symposium (July 2025)

The Rolls-Royce Doctorial Symposium was a showcase of the research being carried out by PhD students partnered with Rolls-Royce across multiple UK universities (Imperial, Queens, Cambridge, Manchester, Bristol etc). All the students presented their work in the form of posters or a presentation, spanning across 4 days with almost 90 presentations and over 50 posters. Among those students from Queen’s, we had 3 RIED PhD students attending, Michael Murphy, Dylan Jones and Thomas Whittaker who were ably supported by Professors Mark Price and Trevor Robinson. As well as the presentations from the students there were a few workshops and tours of different facilities within Rolls Royce.

Michael presented both a poster and a presentation of his work. His poster was on a “Proposed framework enhancing decision-making by allowing designers to explore trade-offs between precision and Supply Chain robustness” and on behalf of his friends and colleagues on the RIED Programme Team, congratulations to Michael as he won second place in the Poster Awards.

Dylan presented a poster titled Design for Meshing – sharing some of the work he had done in the first 9 months of his PhD.

Thomas’ presentation gave an overview of his work to date on his project “Developing a rapid concept generation system for future aviation technologies”. He discussed the underlying systems being used to generate concept designs in a defined domain, as well as the work to date on a custom heat transfer solver for the design system.
