Our PhD Students

University of York

Babis graduated with an integrated Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Thessaly, Greece, in 2023.

His thesis was pursued in collaboration with the Computational Neuroscience team at the Institute of Computer Science in the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (ICS-FORTH), in Crete, Greece, and used ML methods to explore the interplay of neuronal activity in the visual cortex and behavioural characteristics.

Babis has also been involved in extracurricular research activities/projects relevant to CAD and the kinetic modelling of Gene Regulatory Networks (iGEM 2021).

His research interests revolve around Nature-Inspired methods, including Machine Learning, and their mathematical and practical aspects. He started his PhD at the University of York and joined RIED in September 2024. In June 2025, Babis won 3rd prize out of 50 entrants at the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology PhD Conference with his presentation on “Darwin and the Machine – Evolving the Adjacent Possible”.
