Athena Swan Gold Award for the QUB School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Following an announcement on LinkedIn on 6 January 2026, we are delighted to share that the QUB School of EEECS where a number of our RIED academics and researchers are based, was awarded Gold Athena Swan recognition on 13 November 2025.

The Athena Swan Charter recognises sustained commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education and research. The Athena Swan Charter recognises sustained commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education and research. Achieving Gold reflects long-term cultural change, not just policy, and this milestone represents over 15 years of dedicated work across EECS. Since first engaging with Athena Swan in 2011, EEECS has progressed through multiple Silver awards and renewals, culminating in Gold in 2025.

Through this work, staff and students have benefited from initiatives including leadership programmes, teaching fellowships, inclusive training and active bystander workshops.

The School has seen:
👉Increased representation of women in academic and research roles
👉A steady female student population
👉Athena Swan embedded into leadership, strategy and everyday culture
👉Leadership courses for women and minority genders
👉Flexible working arrangements

…and much more.

Why This Matters

This Gold award is a testament to the dedication of the EECS school community over many years. To the best of our knowledge, EEECS is the first Computer Science or Electrical & Electronic Engineering school on the island of Ireland to achieve Gold.
